MoneroSMS is an anonymous SMS reception and sending service operated by VoidNetwork LLC. It sells US phone numbers paid for exclusively in Monero (XMR), Bitcoin (BTC), or — manually, on request — other altcoins and fiat. The project's stated goal is to let anyone verify accounts, receive one-time codes, or hold a phone number for outbound messaging without surrendering any identifying information. A public Tor onion mirror runs in parallel with the clearnet site for users who prefer not to expose their IP.

How it works

Users create an anonymous account directly from the open-source CLI client or through the web dashboard. The account is a token — no email, no phone, no personal data. A Monero deposit address is generated per account; once confirmed, the balance can be spent on buying a number ($3.60/month base) and paying per-SMS fees. Incoming messages are delivered through the web dashboard, the CLI, or an email proxy. Numbers that have been used at least once are never recycled, which preserves the privacy of each number's history.

KYC and privacy

MoneroSMS collects no name, email, phone, or government ID at any stage. The only data it processes is the account token, the Monero deposit address, and the SMS traffic itself, all served over TLS 1.3 and additionally available over the Tor onion service listed above. Payment exclusively in privacy-preserving cryptocurrency, combined with an optional onion connection, means a user can interact with the service with no persistent identity tied to them outside the current session.

Strengths and limits

The biggest strength is architectural: because billing goes through Monero and sessions go through an onion mirror, there is no financial or network link that ties a phone number to a real person. The open-source client means the protocol can be independently audited and rewritten if upstream disappears. The limits, however, are practical and significant. Only US numbers are sold today, non-US outbound texting is restricted, and — at the time of writing — the service is frequently out of inventory, with registration and deposits disabled for stretches at a time. That matters because SMS verification is a just-in-time need: a number that isn't available when you need it isn't a substitute for a working service. There is also no formal third-party security audit, and the operator (VoidNetwork LLC) publishes no jurisdictional or team information beyond a support email.

Verdict

MoneroSMS scores 6.9 / 10 at KYC level anonymous (L1). The design is genuinely privacy-respecting — no identity at signup, crypto-only payments, Tor mirror, open-source client — but operational reliability is the weak link: inventory shortages and a lack of published operational transparency keep the score below a clean 8. Use it when it has stock, keep a backup no-KYC SMS provider in your toolbox, and don't rely on it alone for mission-critical account recoveries.
